Navigation Tips
Nav Do’s:
- Use title attributes for links that are not underlined
- Bold or capitalize each letter of colored text that is not a link
- Use horizontal nav and subnav along with crumbtrail
- Have header background height large enough for both nav and subnav
- Only check cookies and call scripts on relevant pages so they don’t slow down every page
- Put images on a separate subdomain
- Place links to alternate views(printable, rss, mobile) in prominent positions near default links
- Highlight a link to switch back to older versions of an application by using a bold font style and centered header positioning or a simple rollover option which is displayed beneath the current link
Nav Dont’s
- Don’t use AJAX calls with a link mouseover event
- Don’t bold or italicize links
- Don’t underline any text that’s not a link
- No background images behind links to avoid IE CSS hover issues and framerate hit
- No separate background for nav menu
- No vertical main nav with horizontal subnav or horizontal main nav with vertical subnav
- No placement of important nav links only in the footer (wishlist, profile, privacy, logout, etc)
